Drew began to tell the
“Cameron and Drew” story to the reporter. We met in the park, the same park
where we found Gracie. We had both gone to the same park for years, though at
different times, and on different days, so our paths had never crossed. Cameron
is the quiet one, and one day I noticed that he was sitting alone on a bench.
He looked sad, but as it turned out, he was just quite pensive. I knew
immediately that I wanted to meet him. “Excuse me, is this seat taken?” “Oh,
no, have a seat,” Cameron said. “I’m Drew. Do you come here often?” “Yes. I
come here quite often, to think, mostly.” Drew smiled his beautiful smile, and
looked off into the distance. Then he turned toward Cameron. “At the risk of
being forward, I’m going to come right out and ask. Would you like to do
something, as in go on a date?” Cameron looked at Drew, a little shocked. He
had never met anyone who seemed as sure of himself as Drew seemed to be. “Just
tell me to get lost if you want,” Drew said, with a slight laugh. “Um, I would
like that,” Cameron said shyly. “You would like it if I got lost, or if we went
out?” Drew couldn’t help but ask. “Oh, I meant I would like it if we did
something together,” Cameron slowly and quietly answered. “That’s a relief,”
Drew said, and patted Cameron’s arm.
